Priest Lake

Audrey Straub Schertz passed away on February 14, 2024 at the age of 87. She was born in Whitefish, Montana and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho. She was the oldest of four children in the Evenson family.

Audrey was attending trade school at Spokane Community College when she met Jack Straub. They married in 1958. They built their first house and had two children in Spokane. In 1969, the family moved to Priest Lake where they helped develop the Three Waters Association subdivision. Mom was active at the elementary school, in scouting, and PTA fundraisers. She was a caregiver for her in-laws and a helper for dad. They divorced in 1980 and she moved to Coeur d’Alene. She had an active life there attending NIC and working.

In 1983 she married Cecil Schertz. They enjoyed attending auctions, crafting, and owning and operating a hot dog cart every summer on the city beach. Mom enjoyed meeting people and making them happy. Cecil and Audrey moved to Rathdrum and lived there for almost twenty years. They enjoyed going to dances at the grange and Newman Lake, treasuring their many friendships. Mom especially enjoyed gardening, walking and riding her bicycle. In 2016, mom had a severe car accident that put her in assisted living. She lived in Rathdrum for a while, then Alpine Vista in Sandpoint for several years. Her favorite thing while in Sandpoint was walking around the town.

These past ten months, mom has lived very happily at Renaissance Assisted Living in Coeur d’Alene. Mom was the life of the party, walking circles around people living there, and razing the staff. She will be sorely missed.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, and her two husbands. She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Roy) and her son, Steve. She had four grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. A summer memorial will be planned.
