Duaine Lemoyne Johnson, a retired Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, passed away in Post Falls, ID on August 11,2025 at the age of 93. He was born November 18, 1931 in Cando, North Dakota to parents Samuel F. Johnson and Ragnhild K. Fosaaen. 

Duaine grew up on a farm in Eagle Bend, Minnesota and was close to younger siblings Marlene and Ronald. He played football for Eagle Bend Highschool and after graduating in 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Proudly serving during the Korean War, he participated in Operation Hudson Harbor as a dedicated tail gunner. 

Duaine married Susan Ann Shirley on December 2, 1956 in Upper Lake, CA. For 68 years he was a devoted husband to Susan exemplifying the true meaning of partnership and love. Together they were proud parents to four children: Dana, Pamela, Devin and Peggy. Throughout Duaine’s distinguished military career, he and his family moved frequently creating treasured memories.

Retiring in 1970, Duaine moved his family from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK to Aloha, OR where he worked for Pitney Bowes and Washington County before becoming proprietor of Gales Creek Store in 1979. After 25 years he and Susan sold the business and settled into their beautiful retirement home in Fox Island, WA. 

A devoted servant of the Lord, Duaine enjoyed a life long study of the Bible and with a steadfast belief, he looked forward to eternity with his Lord and Savior. He lived life with compassion, kindness and a sense of humor.

He was a proud patriot, deeply committed to his country and it’s values. His hands were skilled at wood carving, creating beautiful pieces that reflected his creativity & passion. He found joy nurturing his garden where he cultivated not only plants, but also cherished memories with his family.

An avid reader, Duaine immersed himself in Zane Grey novels, his favorite being Riders of the Purple Sage. Always a fan of great western films, he especially enjoyed the 1966 American Western classic, El Dorado. Often listening to gospel music, the song “Suppertime” by George Younce was a favorite. It’s lyrics remind us our time together is a blessing and a joyful reunion awaits. 

In addition to his many passions, Duaine spent time outdoors hunting, fishing & camping. This was a significant part of his life bringing him closer to family and friends. Above all, Duaine was a loving father who instilled a profound love of Jesus Christ in his children, guiding them with wisdom, kindness and unwavering support. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren embracing them with love and joy. His legacy of faith snd devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him. 

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.

Duaine is survived by his wife, Susan Johnson (Post Falls, ID), his children Dana & Erin Johnson (Mabank, TX), Pamela Coles (Rainier OR), Devin Johnson (Rainier OR), Peggy & Jamie Kessel (Rathdrum, ID), brother Ronald Johnson (Blaine, MN) along with his sister-in-law Joan Mathias and brother-in-law Joel Mathias (Aumsville, OR). He leaves behind 7 grandchildren & 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Ragnhild Johnson and sister Marlene Willie.

Memorial service at Idaho State Veteran’s Home Post Falls Chapel will be announced.
