Fern Seibert

Fern Seibert, 91, entered into eternity with Jesus on August 4, 2026.

Fern was born the third of six girls in La Junta, Colorado. From the beginning, her life was grounded in faith, family and service. Raised Mennonite, she attended college in Goshen, Indiana, and then began practicing as a physical therapist in Denver, Colorado. She became involved in a supper club at Denver First Presbyterian Church that brought young professionals together through shared meals and activities, and many became lifelong friends. It was there she met Lloyd Seibert, whom she married in September 1961. Three daughters were born over the next six years.

The family moved to Pocatello, Idaho, for two years, then to the northern outskirts of Denver, for six years before settling in the Coeur d’Alene area of North Idaho in 1975 where Fern became a member of Coeur d’Alene First Presbyterian Church. Although she never returned to physical therapy, she worked for several years as a dental assistant.

When she wasn’t sewing gifts for 10 nieces and nephews, making clothes for herself and her daughters, tending a large garden, or caring for the farm animals that country living ultimately put on their table, Fern was caring for others. Her family watched her model compassion and service to widows, orphans, prisoners, immigrants, and her church family. In April 1975, during the fall of Saigon, a plane carrying evacuated infants and children landed in Denver during a layover. Fern was there to comfort and care for these traumatized children. Soon afterward, she began helping a Vietnamese immigrant family adapt to a new culture.

Holiday tables often included senior adults she had befriended while visiting residents of the former Coeur d’Alene Homes, now Orchard Ridge Senior Living, where she herself lived beginning in 2021. Even into her 80s, she picked up homebound friends so they could attend church, Bible studies, and service opportunities. If the church hosted a wedding or funeral, she was in the kitchen. If bathrooms needed cleaning, she was there with a brush in hand. She served as a Stephen Minister, deaconess, elder, church circle leader, choir member, and as a member of the Coeur d’Aleers Community Choir. She was most comfortable behind the scenes — caring for people, opening her home, and quietly living out her faith through love and service.

Dementia is a cruel disease, and it gradually robbed Fern of most of these memories. Age also brought the sorrow of outliving many of those she loved. Therefore, there will not be a formal service, but if you have read this far, perhaps the best way to honor Fern’s life is to look beyond yourself and find someone who could use kindness, help, or companionship, offered freely and with no expectation of return. Fern did not live her life to be good nor earn entry into heaven. Fern’s act of service grew naturally from her love for Jesus and gratitude for God‘s forgiving love.

Fern’s family gives thanks for her long life, her steady faith, and the love she shared so generously with others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, and is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Leanne (David Guyll), Katrina (Steve Nelson), and Tanya (Matt Hill); nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one sister, and many nieces and nephews.
