James Christopher Maland

James "Chris" Christopher Maland, 73, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, passed away on July 10, 2026.

Chris was born on November 21, 1952, in Spokane, Washington, to John and Patricia Maland. He enjoyed an active childhood with his five brothers, two sisters, many beloved cousins, and lifelong friends. Whether exploring Spokane's South Hill, spending summers at the family cabins on Luby Bay (named after his great-grandfather, M.J. Luby) and Kalispell Bay at Priest Lake, or living in Lewiston, Idaho, he created memories he loved to share. From serving as an altar boy and Boy Scout, to fishing, swimming, ice skating, and driving his white Mustang to Lewiston High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1971 and proudly served as a class officer.

A gifted master tile setter and electrician, Chris worked for Bi-Rite Electric & Plumbing for many years. He could build or fix just about anything and took great pride in building the three homes where he raised his family, the last overlooking Hayden Lake.

Chris loved fishing, boating, canoeing, floating the river, four-wheeling, shooting, bowling, playing softball, and cheering on the Seattle Seahawks. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Whether telling stories, cracking jokes, or lending a helping hand, Chris had a way of making people feel like old friends. His infectious laugh, quick wit, generous heart, and larger-than-life personality made every gathering brighter and every visit unforgettable.

He shared two beloved sons, Brian and Steven, with his high school sweetheart, Colleen. In his later years, he had a special bond with Lisi, whose love and companionship brought him comfort, happiness, and joy.

A devoted son, loving brother, proud father, Papa, and Great-Papa, family was the center of Chris's world. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved—sharing stories, celebrating life's milestones, or simply enjoying one another's company. His love was constant, unconditional, and freely given, and he had a remarkable way of making everyone in his family feel special.

Chris was preceded in death by his father, John Paul Maland. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Maland; sisters Molly Falkner (Raymond) and Julie Clark; brothers Mike, Mark, Scott, Todd, and Peter Maland; sons Brian (Cathryn) and Steven Maland; six cherished grandchildren; and six adored great-grandchildren.

Chris will be remembered for his craftsmanship, quick wit, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the homes he built, the lives he touched, and the countless memories he created.

A family graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Cemetery, 236 S. 23rd St., Coeur d'Alene. A Celebration of Life will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the home of his sister, Julie Clark, 1414 N. 5th St., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho 83814.

His absence leaves a space that can never be filled. We will miss his laughter, his stories, his love, and the way he made every visit memorable. We love you, Papa Chris. Until we meet again.
