Raymond was born to William and Melva Schaal in Oakland California.

He was an active young man playing many sports of which baseball was his favorite. After high

school Ray attended UC Berkeley, California where he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity

and was a coxswain for the rowing team. He graduation with a degree in political science and

history, and for the rest of his life was huge Cal Bear Fan. Ray then continued his education at

Vanderbilt law School from which he graduated in 1961. After being admitted to the bar, Ray

entered the army where he served as a JAG officer.

Raymond married Helen (Kruger) March 1, 1969. They moved to Lakeport, CA and he

was a public defender initially and then opened a private law practice. This is where he

developed many lifelong friendships with community members and clients alike. Ray was

always passionate about his work and prided himself on providing superior service for all his

clients. Ray then became Judge Schaal for Lake County, CA. He loved this important position

and was dedicated to people of Lake County. Ray was a highly respected traveling Judge for

years. After his stint as Judge Schaal he was appointed in as the District Attorney to Lake

County. In 1986 Ray transferred to Napa County where he worked until retirement as Chief

Prosecutor Level 4. Ray ended his 38-year law career with his favorite job as Prosecutor.

Ray is survived by his wife Helen Schaal, his children Christopher (Lynda), Graham (Sheila),

and Jennifer Fletcher (Jeff); and grandchildren Cody, Lincoln, William, Lillian, and Jeremy.

Ray had a passion for watching his children and grandkids play sports throughout his lifetime.

He was Rotarian and Elks member for most of his life. He prided himself on being a little league

Coach for many years. He will always be remembered as a die-hard 49’er and Giants fan. He

officiated numerous weddings of family and friends.

Ray was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. He had many happy and fun years with friends

in Lake County, Napa Valley, and in Post Falls during his retirement. After a long sickness, Ray

died of natural causes surrounded by his family. At his request there will be no services held.
