Roy Eugene Mortensen, aged 75, peacefully departed this life on July 5, 2025, at his residence near Saint Maries, Idaho, after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on August 18, 1949, in Salem, Oregon, Roy exemplified a kind and humorous spirit throughout his life.
His education began in Aumsville, Oregon, where he started first grade, and he later attended schools in Rose Lake and Moyie Springs, Idaho, graduating from Kootenai High School. Following his educational pursuits, Roy devoted many years to a successful career ultimately retiring from Sunshine Mine in 2000. He also served in the Army Reserves for six years.
Roy was loved deeply by his family. He is survived by his wife, Kristin Mortensen, whom he married on May 28, 1981. He is also survived by his sons, Jacob Mortensen and his wife Rhiannon, and Gerald Mortensen his stepdaughter, Melody Peterson; and his cherished grandchildren, Cory Fleck, Reilli Johnson and Colton, Rikki Hickman, and Hailey Peterson and Sydnee Mortensen. Additionally, he celebrated the joy of being a great-grandfather to Laramie and Lindy Johnson and Luna Jameson. His close family includes his sister Ann Bryson and Dan, father-in-law, Floyd Klein; brothers-in-law, Kevin Klein, Kerry Klein, and Lonnie; along with numerous nieces and nephews who were fortunate to be part of his life.
Roy now joins those who preceded him in death: his parents, Elmer Mortensen and Georgia Pense; his brother, Jim Mortensen, his stepdaughter, Annette Hickman his cousin, Nikki Gilbreth and his mother-in-law, Beverly Klein.
Roy delighted in hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, antiquing, and attending auctions. He also enjoyed traveling and raised cattle and horses. Known for his work ethic and jovial personality, he was often a jokester with a favorite saying, "Stupid Hurts.” Roy's nurturing spirit extended beyond his family; he helped maintain a small cat rescue, caring for animals. He loved his dogs and had several over the years.
Roy will be remembered not only for his many achievements but also for the love and laughter he brought into the lives of so many. His legacy of kindness, humor, and dedication to family will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege to know him.
A service for Roy will be held August 9th, 2025, at the Country Barn B&B & Event Venue
1 pm. 18413 S. Old Lane Rd. Cataldo, ID 83810.
