Thomas Arthur Simonsen (Tom), born on September 23, 1962, in Ontario, Oregon, passed away peacefully in his home on May 1, 2025, in Rathdrum, Idaho. He was 62 years old. Tom’s journey was marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of those around him.
He was the beloved son of Clinton and Leila Simonsen and grew up in Payette, Idaho. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Simonsen, and his baby sister, Theresa Simonsen. His legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to resonate within his cherished family.
On August 27, 1983, Tom married Lisa Melior Simonsen in a heartfelt ceremony in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Together, they built a life filled with love and support, celebrating 41 years of marriage. Lisa was not only his partner but also his best friend, and together they raised a wonderful family. Tom is survived by his mother, Leila Simonsen, beloved wife, Lisa Simonsen; their daughter, Kari (Paul) Nathan; three grandchildren, Thomas Winters, Moses Nathan, and Monica Perez; his eleven siblings, Andy Simonsen, Rathdrum, ID, Eva Simonsen (Ed) Hendersonville, NC, Joe Simonsen (Sandi) Malott, WA, Lowell Simonsen (Mina) Spokane, WA, Margaret Simpson (Max) Spirit Lake, ID, Muffy (Howard) Trienen Winkelman, AZ, Mary Brown, Spirit Lake, ID, Matthew Simonsen (Debbie) Cullman, AL, Monica Moum (Steve) Freemont, NE, Nicki Harper (Ed) Nampa, ID, and Wendy Hartman (Aaron) Klamath Falls, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom attended Payette High School and throughout his life, he embraced the value of hard work in order to support and provide for his family. Most recently retired, he dedicated his career to various blue-collar jobs, where he developed enduring friendships with his co-workers. Known as “the best guy for sharpening knives,” Tom took pride in his work and enjoyed engaging with the public, always ready to lend a helping hand. He believed deeply in the principle that “we're here to help each other,” which guided his actions both in and out of the workplace.
Tom had a passion for helping others, prioritizing having a home with extra bedrooms to provide support to those in need. He had a unique knack for cooking, particularly with meat, and he was known for his special spice blend affectionately dubbed “Gramp's,” with dreams of one day marketing it. An avid enthusiast of firearms, he took great joy in trading and refinishing rifles, as well as reloading ammunition. He also enjoyed “beating everyone” in Simonsen Rummy and other card games.
Tom's love for life was reflected in his many hobbies and interests, but above all, he was a devoted family man. His heart was big enough to encompass everyone he met, and he was adored by his family and friends alike.
As we remember Tom, we celebrate a life well-lived—one filled with compassion, commitment, and joy. His warm smile, generous spirit, and dedication to family and community will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life service to honor Tom’s memory will be held on May 17th at Majestic Park in Rathdrum from 11:00 to 3:00, where we will share a potluck lunch with family and friends who are invited to share stories and celebrate the incredible life of a truly remarkable man.
May your memory be a blessing, dear Tom. Your legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know you.
